Comparison
WP MegaManager vs MainWP
WP MegaManager vs MainWP for WordPress agencies in 2026 — hosted SaaS vs self-hosted dashboard, what's built in vs what costs extra, and which fits your workflow.
MainWP — Self-hosted, open-source WordPress management dashboard
MainWP runs on your own WordPress install — you maintain it.
MainWP backups require additional extensions and your own storage setup.
MainWP dashboard updates require you to run them manually like any WP plugin.
Not a standard feature among fleet-management tools — most require a separate migration plugin.
We only mark a feature as available when it has shipped. Beta features are usable today in public beta; “Soon” items are on our public roadmap. Competitor columns reflect publicly available information as of June 2026. Spot something out of date? Let us know.
Why teams pick WP MegaManager
- Hosted SaaS — no WordPress dashboard to maintain, no server to patch, no backup of your management tool itself.
- Multi-region uptime checks built in — MainWP requires a separate uptime service.
- AI Copilot included at every tier, with AI task automation in beta — not even available as add-ons in MainWP.
- WooCommerce analytics across all stores in your dashboard (in beta).
- Modern UI: keyboard-friendly, fast, designed for agencies in 2026.
- Backups and performance analysis built in — no add-on extensions to buy and configure (malware scanning is on the roadmap).
- Site transfer moves a staging build onto the live site in a few clicks — no separate migration plugin, no manual find-and-replace on serialized data.
- Client feedback lets reviewers click anywhere on a live or staging site to leave a comment pinned to that exact element — no login required.
Where MainWP is strong
- Free and open-source — no monthly fee for the core platform.
- Self-hosted: your data stays on your own server.
- Mature plugin ecosystem with many extensions.
- Unlimited child sites at no extra cost.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose WP MegaManager or MainWP?
If you prefer SaaS — no servers to maintain, AI features included, modern UI — choose WP MegaManager. If you prefer self-hosted with full data ownership and don't mind running another WordPress install (plus paid extensions for backups, security, etc.), MainWP is a reasonable choice. Agencies usually find SaaS faster to onboard and easier to scale.
Is MainWP really free?
The core MainWP dashboard plugin is free and open-source. However, most production-grade features — Pro Reports, backups, uptime monitoring, advanced security — are paid extensions. A full MainWP Pro bundle typically costs $400+ per year. WP MegaManager bundles backups, uptime and reporting at every tier without separate extensions (security scanning is on our roadmap).
Can I migrate from MainWP to WP MegaManager?
Yes. Install the free MegaManager Connector plugin on each WordPress site and connect it to your MegaManager dashboard. You can leave the MainWP child plugin installed during the transition — there are no conflicts. Backups in S3-compatible storage can be re-pointed to your existing buckets.
What about data ownership?
WP MegaManager backups go to your own S3-compatible bucket (Backblaze B2, Wasabi, AWS S3, Cloudflare R2) — you own and control them just like in MainWP. Site credentials and connection tokens are stored encrypted on our hosted infrastructure in the EU.
Can WP MegaManager push a staging build to a live site?
Yes — site transfer (in public beta) copies a staging build onto a live site in a few clicks, rewriting URLs inside serialized page-builder data so layouts arrive intact. MainWP has no equivalent built in; a serialization-unaware migration is exactly what tends to produce blank Divi or Elementor modules.
